These tiny sprouts show that the bales are being kept moist enough!
We found the garden nice and wet today. The sprouts are from leftover seeds in the straw bales. The recommended removal method is snipping them with scissors, but we just pulled them out. This is about as tough as the weeding gets with straw bale gardening! No trouble determining "weeds" at this point as we have not planted any vegetables yet.
The Barkhamsted Garden is a newly emerging community project centered on the initiation and maintenance of a vegetable garden next to Town Hall. The founders of the garden had their 2nd meeting tonight – Feb. 23, 2010. The mission statement, goals and objectives are still being clarified but primarily are:
1. Have Barkhamsted youth learn about sustainable agriculture through participation
2. Donate produce from the garden to Food Pantry for distribution to those in need
3. Benefit the community as a whole with the greening of Barkhamsted.
This year’s garden is going to be a straw bale tipi garden. Pictures, links and lots more information to follow!
